This photo of Larry Harvey was the inspiration for the creation of Metal Mimi Camp.
The charming little creature known as Mimi is the beloved canine child of Dana Albany and Flash.
The decades long love and friendship that they shared with Larry was deep and vast.
As you can see in the photo, Larry also loved their little Mimi.
These three friends were together at the very beginning of Burning Man. They are the foundation of the Burning Man Family. It is our goal to hold firm to the history and the people that helped to build and nurture Black Rock City from its birth.
With the creation of Metal Mimi Camp, our intention and our foundation is to remember and honor our friends who are responsible for the place we now call our home in the desert.
Larry was also the reason and the catalyst for Dana to become an Artist. In 1995, Larry and Flash were wandering out in the Black Rock Desert when they happened upon a beautiful woman and her camel. Dana, who was not yet an artist, had built a paper mache camel to bring with her for her first visit to the desert. At this first encounter, and as their friendship grew, Larry expressed to Dana again and again that she needed to continue with her art. Larry made sure that she began to see herself as an artist.
Thankfully, for all of us, Dana followed Larry's advise and has become an extraordinary artist. She is a major part of the heart and soul of the Burning Man Family. Simply put, our community would not be the same without our lovely and most beloved Dana and her art.
Metal Mimi camp wishes to celebrate her and other artists that she has mentored along the way. As Larry did his part in cultivating the artist in Dana, it is our desire to support and highlight artists who bring their art to Black Rock City.
Since her first year with her camel, she has graced our city, along with many other cities, with her profound sculptures and shrines. Burning Man 2024 has awarded Dana Honorarium. Metal Mimi Camp will be assisting Dana with the Release Sculpture and we also feel truly blessed that Dana will also be installing a sculpture at our camp.
When we arrive this year to the desert, and as we gaze upon Release, we will be reminded of
the eternal love and friendship that these dear friends shared.
